FRANKLIN,
PA ... Another day filled with sunshine and beautiful skies graced
Tri-City Speedway for Sunday evening’s race, which was the second night
of the Oil Region Labor Day Classic Weekend 2007. Dan Stone of Thompson,
Pa., scored the biggest upset win in World of Outlaws Late Model Series
history in the 50-lap event earning $10,000 for his triumph. World of
Outlaws Media Director Kevin Kovac issued a separate story on that
event.
In the
companion show, Carl McKinney of Cranberry Township, Pa., completed a
weekend sweep as he won the Allegheny Toyota E Series All Star 30 for
the RPM Auto Sales/Shawgo Real Estate E Mods, and Jason Reagle of Oil
City, Pa., won the William R. Karns Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning
Detroit Iron Pro Stock Series event for the E.F. Rogers Plumbing &
Heating Pro Stocks.
Carl
McKinney took the lead on the second circuit of the E Series All Star 30
for the E Mods, and raced to his second win of the weekend. McKinney’s
race winnings over the weekend totaled in excess of $2,200 placing
double exclamation points on his championship season in Mike
Hendrickson’s Holden Precision Machine/Gil Dahlstrom Iron & Metal Pierce
No. 6M. The 2007 E Mod track champion also captured the E Series title.
“This car
was awesome right off the trailer,” said McKinney after his fifth win of
the season and his sixth career win at Tri-City. “I have to thank the
owner, Mike Hendrickson, and his entire crew. They put together an
awesome car each week. I got out front and just kept hitting my marks. I
hope the fans didn’t think the race was too boring, but I enjoyed it
from my seat!”
Bobby
Whitling started on the pole position and took command at the start.
McKinney, who started third, was quickly on Whitling’s rear bumper.
Showing his car could work in any lane, McKinney raced outside Whitling
off turn four to take the lead on the second lap. Once out front,
McKinney blew the competition away. Even three cautions on the fifth
circuit didn’t slow his pace. The final 25 circuits ran under green flag
conditions, and McKinney easily captured the win over Whitling by 4.833
seconds. Jim Frontz finished third. After suffering through a luckless
weekend, Shawn Shingledecker earned $100 as the Hovis Auto & Truck
Supply Hard Charger of the Race after starting 20th and
finishing fourth. Mike Samuelson finished fifth for his second top five
finish of the weekend. Whitling, Justin Carlson and McKinney won the E
Mod heats for the 31-car field. Mike Potosky won the B Main.
Jason
Reagle captured a hard-earned victory in the 20-lap Detroit Iron Pro
Stock Series feature. Taking the lead from Dave Ferringer on the 17th
circuit, Reagle held off the hard-charging Ferringer for his fourth win
of the season at Tri-City in his R.K. Virgile Scrap Metals Dodge No.
Triple8. It was his eighth career win at Tri-City.
“I tried
Dave on the high side before that caution, but then he slipped up in
turn one and I got under him,” said Reagle. “I knew he was there because
Dave tried to get me loose off turn two. This win means a lot for our
team, especially with the Applefest 100 coming up.”
Russ
Coyne took the early lead in the race. Ferringer and Reagle were running
second and third by the fourth circuit, and they hounded Coyne. On the
10th circuit, Ferringer raced under Coyne into the first
turn. He completed the pass by the fourth corner and led at the 11th
lap. Reagle followed Ferringer past Coyne on the next circuit. A
five-car crash on the 13th circuit brought out the red flag,
and allowed Reagle to take a different approach to pass Ferringer. After
trying to pass the former track champion on the high side, Reagle stuck
to the low end of the track after the restart. Waiting for a mistake, it
occurred entering turn one on the 17th circuit. Reagle found
room under Ferringer and took command. Ferringer tried to get Reagle
loose on the next circuit, then tried to switch to the outside lane to
no avail. At the finish, Reagle was the winner over Ferringer. Bobby
Whitling finished third and heads into the CSOnline Applefest 100 with a
31-point lead over Reagle in the Detroit Iron Pro Stock Series
standings. After suffering an engine failure on Saturday night, track
champion Doug Iorio II finished fourth. Coyne was fifth. Danny Exley,
Reagle and rookie Don Kramer won the Pro Stock heat races for the 28-car
field. It was Kramer’s first-ever heat race win.
Tri-City
Speedway will be in action this coming weekend when the ATVA Extreme
Dirt Track Nationals invade for a two-day show. On Friday, September 7th,
the ATV racers will take to a specially-built motocross style track in
the infield for practice. Racing takes place all day Saturday September
8th.
Oval
track action will return to Tri-City on Sunday September 16th
with the final race of the 2007 season, the 11th Annual
CSOnline Applefest 100. Featuring the E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro
Stocks in the final William R. Karns Plumbing, Heating & Air
Conditioning Detroit Iron Pro Stock Series race of the season, the
100-lap affair is the biggest regional event for the division. The race
pays $1,500-to-win and over $2,000 in lap money. The Klapec Auto Body
Thundercars will also be in competition in the 5th Annual
Apple Core 20. The FASTRAK Late Models will be in town as well for an
exhibition. The show will conclude with the final Lowry Auto Wrecking
Compact Car Demo Derby of the season. Gates open at 2 p.m. and racing
starts at 4 p.m. in the special twilight event. Adult grandstand
admission is $11.
