ROD GEORGE, KEVIN BOLLAND, BOBBY WHITLING AND JEFF MANNERS SCORE FEATURE WINS AT TRI-CITY; ALEXIS SHINGLEDECKER WINS LADIES E MOD RACE

June 18, 2006

FRANKLIN, PA  ... Despite hot and humid conditions, Tri-City Speedway celebrated Father’s Day in style as Rod George (4 Your Car Connection Super Sprints), Kevin Bolland (Schwab’s Ford DIRT Modifieds), Bobby Whitling (E.F. Rogers Plumbing & Heating Pro Stocks) and Jeff Manners (Klapec Auto Body Thundercars) captured feature wins on Cranberry Pennzoil 10 Minute Oil Change Night at the Venango County half-mile oval

In addition to the regular action, the Victim’s Resource Center Ladies E Mod Charity Race was held, and Alexis Shingledecker captured the feature win.

Rod George of Kittanning, Pa., followed the moves of fellow competitor Todd Bauer to capture his third Super Sprint win of the season. After losing the lead to Bauer early in the race, George charged back to take command on the 11th circuit. From there, George drove to his 40th career win at Tri-City in his Notary Express/Roadrunner Auto Sales Maxim No. 4.

“How about Todd Bauer,” exclaimed George in victory lane. “He surprised me with that pass on the top side. He ran well there last week and showed it to us again this week. Once we moved up there, the car worked better than it had all night.”

Andy McKisson and George started on the front row of the 20-lap feature. George raced into the lead at the green flag while Todd Bauer took second. On the sixth circuit, Bauer closed on George and used the high groove to drive around the defending track champion in turns one and two to take command. Bauer sprinted away to a huge lead, then encountered lapped traffic. While trying to weave by rookie Scott Rodgers, Bauer was trapped. Using the same outside line that worked for Bauer, George dashed around the leader. He then survived two caution periods to capture the win. Bauer finished second. Brent Covell passed McKisson on the 14th circuit to take third at the finish. McKisson was fourth followed by Jody Keegan, who passed Bob Felmlee with one lap to go when Felmlee drifted wide in turn three. Felmlee and Rob Eyler won the Super Sprint heats.

Kevin Bolland of New Brighton, Pa., is now the top DIRT Modified feature winner at Tri-City after his victory in the 25-lap Schwab’s Ford Big Block Modified Challenge Series event. Taking the lead on the fifth circuit, Bolland outdistanced the competition to capture his third win of the season. The victory was Bolland’s 25th career win at Tri-City, which broke a tie with Lou Blaney and Ed Lynch.

“We started racing against Lou Blaney and Ed Lynch, and it’s been a long time to get here,” said Bolland in victory lane with his Cintas Uniform/Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe Bicknell No. 777. “We usually are focused on winning the race, rather than milestones, but this one means a lot for our team. The track was great and the crew prepared a perfect car tonight.”

Chris Schiffer and Andy Priest traded the lead in the first two circuits of the feature race. Bolland, who started seventh, quickly moved through the field. Battling hard with Priest for the lead, Bolland drove under him in turns three and four to take command on the fifth circuit. Once out front, Bolland was peerless. While Priest held second, Rex King worked his way through the top five. King first dueled with Jeremiah Shingledecker for several circuits before he took fourth on the 15th lap. Then, he passed Joe Crawford for third with only three laps to go. On the final circuit, King’s engine seized in turn four, which ended his stellar run. Bolland and Priest crossed the line in first and second. Jim Rasey finished third over Shingledecker and Crawford. Rex King and Kevin Bolland won the DIRT Modified heats.

Bobby Whitling of Seneca, Pa., finally ended a long winless streak in the 15-lap Pro Stock feature. Piloting his E&K Equipment/Double Play Sports Bar Chevrolet No. 7W, Whitling took the lead on the third circuit and held off a hard-charging Doug Iorio II for his first feature win since August 22, 2004. It was Whitling’s 38th career win at Tri-City.

“The drought is over,” exclaimed Whitling. “We’ve just had little things stop us from winning. I don’t want to go through this again. I was about ready to quit racing.”

Polesitter Rod Laskey took the lead at the start of the race while Whitling grabbed second. Whitling charged under Laskey off turn four to grab the lead on the third circuit. Five cautions slowed the action, but failed to deter Whitling. Behind him, Iorio took third from Joe Lockhart on the fourth circuit. He then dueled with Laskey before Iorio took second on the sixth lap. One lap later, Laskey was in second again with an outside pass on Iorio. Pacing himself, Iorio finally made a move that stuck on the ninth circuit. By then, it was too late for Iorio to catch Whitling, although he closed the gap to 1.544 seconds at the end. Whitling’s victory ended Iorio’s three-race win streak. Lockhart finished third while Scott Myers passed Laskey on the final circuit for fourth. Whitling and young Jackson Humanic won the Pro Stock heat races.

Taking the lead on the opening lap of the 12-lap Thundercar feature, Jeff Manners of Cherrytree, Pa., scored his third win of the season. It was the eighth career win for the 2003 track champion in his Jerry’s Auto Repair/Cherrytree General Store Buick No. 16.

“We built this car from scratch over the winter,” said Manners. “That’s the only thing different, but it’s working great.”

While Manners raced out front, the battle behind him was intense for the entire race. Bill Myers held the spot while Josh Seippel tried to track him down. On the fourth circuit, Seippel pulled off the track with mechanical problems. This moved Ed and Regina Deloe into contention. With an amazing three-wide move on the ninth circuit, Regina Deloe stormed into second. At the finish, Manners topped Regina Deloe, who captured her career-best finish. Ed Deloe finished third over Myers and Curt Bish Sr. Myers and Charlie McMillen won the Thundercar heats.

Piloting Shawn Shingledecker’s Lucky Hills Golf Course/Madara Equipment Pierce No. 45S normally driven by Brent Rhebergen, Alexis Shingledecker of Polk, Pa., won the 12-lap Victim’s Resource Center Ladies E Mod Charity Race. It was Shingledecker’s second win in the race, which she won in 2005 while driving the DIRT Modified raced by her husband, Jeremiah. This time, Shingledecker held off Heidi Thomas for the win. Thomas’ last ditch effort ended against the wall in the turn four on the final circuit.

“I didn’t know she was back there,” said Shingledecker. “I’m glad the team kept me in the car after I crashed in the heat race. This event is a lot of fun and it’s for a good cause. Happy Father’s Day to my dad and all the fathers out there.”

Cindi Stiffler led the first circuit before Shingledecker took command. No cautions slowed the race, but Thomas was on the charge. Driving the E Mod piloted by her husband, Bill, Thomas dove under Stiffler on the ninth circuit, then went to the outside lane to try and snatch the lead from Shingledecker with the white flag in the air. Over the course of the final circuit, Shingledecker stayed low and held off Thomas, whose valiant effort ended with her accident. Stiffler finised second over Tammy Powell, who drove Bruce Powell’s E Mod. Thomas was credited with fourth followed by Nikki Hotchkiss in Darrell Bossard’s car. Stacy Shingledecker captured the heat race in her husband’s E Mod.

At the end of the night, Roger Blake of Titusville, Pa., won the 30-car Lowry Auto Wrecking Compact Car Demo Derby.
